On the silicone side the choice starts with cure type. Sanitary grades carry a fungicide and belong on bathroom and kitchen joints; construction silicones are formulated for exterior exposure and movement; shower grades go on the glass-to-wall joints that stay permanently damp, and heat (gasket) silicone around engine gaskets and ovens. That aquarium silicone contains no fungicide is not an omission but a requirement: the additive leaches into water and harms livestock.

With sealants, chemistry decides the job. Polyurethane gives high adhesion and movement capability, belongs in facade and floor joints, and takes paint once cured. Siliconised sealant is acrylic-based: paintable, more flexible than pure acrylic, and the material for interior joints and timber frames. Fix All and Multibond are hybrid polymers — adhesive and sealant at once, applicable to damp surfaces and free of isocyanates.

Polyurethane foam divides three ways: gun grade meters its output, so it wastes less and lays neater; straw foam suits one-off jobs; and fire rated foam carries a declared B1 or B2 class for regulated penetrations. Board adhesive foam is made low-expansion so insulation boards can be fixed without waiting on mortar.

Packaging decides cost too: the 280-310 ml cartridge runs in a standard gun and suits occasional work, while a 600 ml foil sausage leaves far less packaging waste for the same volume and costs less per litre, but needs a sausage gun. Sausages for crews working continuously, cartridges for a few units a year.

  • What is the difference between acetic and neutral cure silicone?

    The by-product released during cure. Acetic silicone releases acetic acid (the vinegar smell), cures fast and belongs on glass and ceramics; it can attack metal, concrete and marble. Neutral cure silicone is non-corrosive and is safe on aluminium, concrete, natural stone and mirrors.

  • How does Fix All differ from ordinary silicone?

    Fix All is a hybrid (SMX) polymer: it works as both adhesive and sealant, applies to damp surfaces and can be painted once cured. Silicone is a sealant only — it will not hold paint and bonds less strongly.

  • Should I buy cartridges or sausages?

    It is printed on the packaging — typically 12-18 months for silicones and sealants, shorter for polyurethane foam. A product that has been frozen or stored in extreme heat should not be used even within date.
