A scraper is the tool for the removal work that comes before painting. Its rigid edge is laid against the surface and lifts blistered paint, flaking distemper, old wallpaper, glue residue and set mortar. Unlike a filling knife the blade does not flex: the force goes into cutting rather than into bending. The blade width is chosen by the job. A narrow blade puts more pressure into a corner, a frame edge or a stubborn spot; a wide blade clears more area per pass on a flat wall and is less likely to leave a mark.
