• What is the difference between the Eco, Lux and Super cutting-in series?

  The difference is how full the bristle block is and how long it lasts. Eco is the consumable brush for day-to-day interior work: bought by the box and replaced at the end of the job. Lux carries a fuller block -- more paint per load, the line in one pass, and no shed bristles in the wet film. Super is the fullest block and is made only in No 3 and No 4.

• What size does a brush number correspond to?

  The number is the width of the brush and it grows with the number. The millimetre equivalent of a given number shifts by a few millimetres between manufacturers, so the catalogue quotes the number. In practice No 1 and No 1.5 are for edges, corners and frames; No 2 and No 2.5 for general work; No 3 and No 4 for wide surfaces and long cutting-in passes. If you need a specific millimetre width, ask by order code.

• Should I choose a wooden or a plastic handle?

  It follows the paint. Solvent and thinner soften a plastic handle over time, so wooden handles are preferred for oil, synthetic and varnish work. On water based emulsion and satin paint a plastic handle is fine and costs less. A wooden handle also does not slip in a wet hand and tires the hand less over a long session.

• Is a robot brush the same as a cutting-in brush?

  No. Both cut a line, but a robot brush's head turns relative to the handle, so it angles without coming off. The curved and enclosed places a straight brush cannot reach -- ceiling cornices, plasterboard edges, behind coving and behind pipework -- are cut in with a robot brush. The Yılsan robot brush is made from No 2 to No 5.

• What is the difference between short and long bristle on a whitewash brush?

  Bristle length sets the stiffness. Short bristle does not splay under pressure, works the paint into the surface and pushes it into the pores of coarse render, bare concrete and blockwork. Long bristle is softer, carries more material and covers a wide flat area without leaving marks. Short for facades and rough surfaces, long for a smooth interior wall.

• How does a pole-mount scraper differ from a plain scraper?

  The blade is the same; the handle is not. The pole-mount handle is threaded, so a paint pole or extension handle screws in and ceilings, stairwells and high walls are scraped from the ground rather than from a scaffold. It also works as an ordinary scraper without the pole. A plain scraper has a fixed handle.

• Can I fit an extension pole to the whitewash brushes and scrapers?

  Yes. Whitewash brushes, pole-mount scrapers and yard and floor broom heads all have a threaded socket that takes a standard paint pole or extension handle. Yard and floor broom heads are sold without a handle; the handle is ordered separately.

• Why is a food grade brush a separate product?

  Because its head and handle are a single piece of plastic. A wooden handle takes up water and cracks in time, and a crack in a food business is dirt that cannot be cleaned out. A one-piece plastic body is washed in hot water with detergent and disinfectant and can be boiled. Businesses working to a colour-coding scheme keep a separate brush per zone.

• How do I choose between a yard broom and a floor broom?

  By the floor. The thick, stiff plastic bristle of a yard broom reaches into the texture of rough outdoor ground: concrete slabs, block paving, asphalt and bare earth. A floor broom is for indoors and is chosen by bristle length -- short stiff bristle moves stuck-on dirt and wet mud, long soft bristle picks up fine dust without throwing it into the air.

• Is there a number or size that is not shown in the catalogue?

  The 64 lines listed here are the stocked items; the range Yılsan produces is wider. If the number, size or series you need is not listed, request it by order code or description and we will come back on availability and price.
