An oil paint brush is a flat brush for synthetic and alkyd paints, varnish, primer and any finish thinned with solvent. Oil paint is heavier and flows more slowly than emulsion; the brush spreads it and leaves the film open enough for the brush marks to close by themselves. The handle is wood, because solvent and thinner soften a plastic one over time, and the bristle block is clamped with a metal ferrule. Joinery, door and window frames, radiators, railings and steelwork are painted with this brush. After the job it is washed in thinner, the bristles are straightened and it is hung flat to dry. The number is the width of the brush: a small number is for narrow surfaces, edges and corners, a large number covers more area in the same time. A job is usually run with two numbers rather than one — the wide one for the field, the narrow one to finish the edges.
