Taps cut internal threads. The standard (DIN371, 376, 374, 2181, 352, 5156 ...) sets the shank and length, the thread type (metric, fine, UNC, UNF, BSP, NPT, PG) the profile. A straight flute tap is for through holes and short-chipping material, a 35° spiral flute tap for blind holes because it lifts the chip out; a forming tap shapes the thread without cutting chips. HSS-E, cobalt steel and TiN and TiCN coatings extend life in difficult material. This family comes in 3 options: UNF1/4″x28, UNF3/8″x24, UNF5/16″x24.
