MIG/MAG welding wire runs as a solid wire fed continuously under a shielding gas: because the arc never stops for an electrode change, it deposits far faster than a stick electrode and leaves little slag to clean. Wire diameter follows plate thickness — a thin wire runs at lower current on sheet metal, a heavier wire gives the higher deposition rate that thick sections need. Magmaweld SG2 is a solid MIG/MAG welding wire classified AWS A5.18 ER70S-6, run under 100% CO2 (EN ISO 14341-A G 42 3 C1 3Si1) or an argon mixture (G 42 4 M21 3Si1). It is used on general structural steels, pipe steels and cast steels; steel fabrication and shipbuilding, machinery, tank and boiler manufacture, metal goods production and the automotive industry are its main fields. The thin, even copper coating improves the wire's electrical conductivity and its resistance to rusting. Preheating is advised according to the thickness and carbon equivalent of the material being welded. This spool carries 15 kg of 1.00 mm wire. At 1.00 mm the wire bridges sheet work and medium sections — the general-purpose diameter for shops that want to cover a wide range of jobs on a single wire.
