The R250 is a laser detector: it finds the plane a rotating construction laser establishes, on the staff. Outdoors the beam is invisible to the eye in daylight, so the detector picks it up electronically and marks the exact grade line with an audible and visual signal — which is why on an open site a detector is not an optional accessory but the condition of working at all.
