Range, accuracy and functions

Two figures define a distance meter: range and accuracy. Interior work is served comfortably by 40-60 m, while facades, warehouses and land work want 80-100 m or more. Accuracy is typically ± 1.5 mm — a figure that assumes ideal conditions, since an angled hit, dust in the air or a glossy surface all widen the deviation.

The functions extend what the tool does: area and volume for paint and plaster take-offs, continuous measurement for finding a point, and the Pythagoras function for calculating an unreachable height from two readings. Bluetooth models push the reading straight into a phone or drawing app, removing transcription errors.

Outdoors: detectors and tripods

In daylight the laser dot becomes invisible to the eye. Long-range and outdoor measurement calls for either a target plate or a laser detector; the detector finds the beam electronically and signals with sound and display, which in practice can double the usable range.

A tripod makes the measurement repeatable. Held by hand at long range, a few millimetres of angular wander becomes centimetres of error; mounted on a 5/8" or 1/4" thread the instrument reads from the same point every time. Transferring a datum also calls for a levelling staff.

  • Does a laser meter replace a tape?

    Over distance and when working alone, yes. Over short spans, inside corners and while marking out a tape is faster, which is why most crews carry both.

  • Does ± 1.5 mm hold in every condition?

    No, it assumes ideal conditions. An angled hit, dust, a glossy or very dark surface and long range all widen the deviation. A target plate restores the reading in those cases.

  • I cannot see the dot outdoors. What now?

    In daylight the dot disappears to the eye. Use a target plate, or fit a laser detector; the detector finds the beam electronically and markedly extends the usable range.

  • What is the Pythagoras function for?

    Measuring a height you cannot reach: take two or three readings and the instrument solves the right triangle between them. It is used on facades, columns and similar.

  • What does a Bluetooth model gain me?

    It sends the reading straight to a phone, tablet or drawing app. That removes the errors that come from holding a figure in your head and writing it down later, and speeds up take-offs.
