In socket fusion the outside of the pipe and the inside of the fitting are heated at once in a socket, and the pipe is pushed into the fitting; it is the standard at plumbing diameters of Ø 16-125 mm.

Choosing by Welding Method

The method follows pipe diameter and what the line does. Butt fusion melts two pipe ends against a heating plate and joins them under pressure — the method for PE pressure mains, used well beyond Ø 630 mm. Socket fusion heats the outside of the pipe and the inside of the fitting simultaneously in a socket, and is the standard at plumbing diameters (Ø 16-125 mm).

Electrofusion passes current through a fitting with an embedded resistance wire, which is what you want in confined spaces and repair connections. Extrusion welding covers thick-walled sheet, tanks and fabricated parts. Band saws square the pipe before welding, and fittings fabrication machines build elbows, tees and manifolds out of pipe sections.
