Manual metal arc (MMA) welding carries the filler metal and its protective slag cover in a single stick, so no gas cylinder and no wire feeder are needed — which is why it remains the most widely used process on site, outdoors and in repair and maintenance work. The covering type sets the character of the weld: a rutile covering gives easy arc striking and a smooth bead, while a basic covering produces low-hydrogen deposits that resist dynamic loading and cracking. ESB 48 is a basic covered, low-hydrogen electrode classified AWS A5.1 E7018 H8 / EN ISO 2560-A E 42 3 B 42 H10. It is made for work under dynamic loading where high strength is required: bridges, large steel structures, shipbuilding, pipeline welds, tanks, pressure vessels, boilers and machinery fabrication. Metal recovery is 115%; it blends into the parent metal without undercut, leaves smooth clean beads, bridges gaps well and gives welds of high radiographic quality. It also serves as a buffer layer on high-carbon steels. With basic electrodes moisture is the first cause of porosity and cracking: once the box is open, re-dry for 2 hours at 350 °C when required. This box holds 90 electrodes measuring 2.50 x 350 mm — the diameter used on thin sections and for root runs.
