1000V Insulated Hand Tools

1000V insulated hand tools are insulated for work on live installations and individually dielectric tested: proof-tested at 10,000 V and rated for 1000 V under IEC 60900. The insulation is the only thing between the user and the phase conductor, which is why a cracked, cut or heat-deformed tool is replaced rather than repaired. What 1000V certifies: tested at 10,000 V, rated at 1000

IEC 60900 defines the design and testing of hand tools for live working. Every tool in scope is individually dielectric tested after manufacture: proof-tested at 10,000 V and rated for 1000 V AC (1500 V DC) in service. The gap between those numbers is a safety margin, not a working range.

The insulation is two-layered and the inner layer is a different colour: seeing that colour through a worn outer layer is the designed signal that the tool must be withdrawn. It is the most practical check a user can make by eye.

Rules of use

An insulated tool does not replace personal protective equipment or proving the circuit dead; it is the last layer only. Prove the tester on a known live source before and after the work.

A tool whose insulation is cracked, cut, pierced or heat-deformed is not repaired -- taping or sealing it does not restore the rating. Store these tools away from direct sun and heat sources.
