What leather does

Leather delays heat and resists puncture markedly better than a coated knit; it does not melt under a spark, it chars. That is why welding, foundry, glass and scrap work use leather.

In exchange, dexterity falls and the glove gets thicker. On small-part work leather is the wrong choice; there, a thin coated knit glove is used.

What changes in a welding glove

TIG welding needs the filler rod fed by hand, so the glove has to stay thin and sensitive; TIG gloves are made from softer, thinner leather for that reason. MMA and MIG produce more heat and spatter, so the glove thickens and the cuff lengthens.

Cuff length is not a preference but a protection parameter: spatter lands on whatever part of the wrist is left open.
