Surface Plates & V-Blocks

Every measurement made with a height gauge, indicator or V-block is made against a reference plane. The granite surface plate is that plane; a V-block holds round work with its axis parallel to it, and parallel sets raise the part to the height needed in a machine vice and on the plate.

Granite surface plates

A plate's accuracy is given by its DIN876 grade: grade 00 for calibration and the laboratory, grade 0 for inspection and precise shop measurement. Size follows the largest part to be worked on it and the height gauge's travel.

A plate should rest on three points; granite stands are built to carry it there, which keeps it flat.

V-blocks and parallels

A V-block holds shafts, tubes and round parts on a fixed axis for runout and concentricity checks and for marking out. Clamp V-blocks grip the part; magnetic V-blocks hold steel by magnet. V-blocks used in pairs must be matched.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between grade 00 and grade 0?

The flatness tolerance. Grade 00 is roughly twice as flat and is used for calibration and laboratory work.

  • How should a granite plate be cleaned?

Wipe off dust and swarf with a soft cloth and use a granite cleaner. Do not leave oil or coolant standing on it.
