Tapping Machines
An arm tapping machine drives the tap with a motor at the end of an articulated arm. The part is clamped once to the cast table and the arm is swung from hole to hole; with the head turned horizontal, holes in a side face are tapped too. On servo models tap size, pitch, thread depth and speed are entered on a touch screen.

Why an arm tapper rather than a drill press?
On a drill press the part moves under the spindle for every hole. On an arm tapper the part stays put and the arm comes to the hole: on flanges, covers, plates and housings with many holes the re-clamping disappears, and the arm holds the tap square to the hole by itself.
Servo torque protection
The commonest cause of a broken tap is the tap carrying on turning after it has bottomed out in a blind hole. On a servo machine a torque limit is set; when it is exceeded the motor stops and reverses. Getting a broken tap out of a part often costs more than the tap.
Peck (forward-reverse) mode backs the tap off at set intervals to break the chip, for deep holes and ductile material. On coolant models the tap runs cooled and chips are blown out of the hole.
Capacity and tap holders
Capacity is given as a metric tap range (M2-M16, M5-M36). Each tap size uses a safety tap holder; the machine ships with a set, and holders for other sizes are offered by manufacturer code.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an arm tapping machine used for?
Batch tapping of parts with many holes: flanges, covers, plates, frames, mould plates, machine housings. With the head horizontal it taps side faces too.
Will the tap break in a blind hole?
On a servo machine the torque limit stops the motor when the tap bottoms out. Thread depth is also entered on the screen and the machine reverses at that depth.
Are taps included?
No; tap holders are, taps are consumables. Machine and hand taps are on the Taps & Dies shelf.
What power supply is needed?
The servo models on this shelf run on 230 V; motor power and voltage are in the specification table.
