Jacks

A jack raises a vehicle or a machine briefly, in place, hydraulically or mechanically. The range here runs from 2 to 50 tonnes and covers bottle jacks, trolley jacks, mechanical screw jacks, transmission jacks and motorcycle lifts. Remember what a jack is for: it lifts a load, it does not hold one — any work underneath needs axle stands.

A jack raises a vehicle or a machine briefly, in place. A bottle jack gives the highest capacity in the smallest body and runs from 2 to 50 tonnes; a trolley jack is low enough to slide under a car and rolls to the lifting point on its own wheels. Mechanical screw jacks are threaded rather than hydraulic, which is why sites and farm workshops specify them — there is no oil to lose. Transmission jacks hold a heavy driveline component balanced on a flat cradle. Never work under a load held by a jack alone: once it is up, set it down on axle stands.
