Petrol Generators

A petrol generator drives an alternator from a petrol engine in a portable frame. Compared with a diesel set of the same rating it is lighter, quieter and cheaper to buy, which makes it the usual choice for home and small-office backup, hand tools and lighting on site, mobile trade units and field work. The range here runs from 0.8 kVA to 15 kVA.

What a petrol generator is enough for

Petrol sets are built for short and medium duration use. A 3–5 kVA set covers lighting, a fridge, a television and chargers; an 8–10 kVA set covers the essential loads of a small shop or a villa. Installations that need long hours under heavy load are better served by a diesel set.

Recoil-start models are the most economical option; electric-start models turn over on a key and are far easier in cold weather. In the model names, suffixes such as LE and CE indicate the starting method and a trailing 3 indicates three-phase output.

  • 0.8 – 3 kVA: lighting, small appliances, camping and caravans
  • 3.5 – 5 kVA: small flat backup, hand tools on site
  • 8 – 10 kVA: villa, small shop, irrigation pump
  • 12 – 15 kVA: small workshop, heavily loaded field use

Petrol or diesel

Petrol sets are lighter, quieter and clearly cheaper at low ratings, which is the right trade for occasional backup. Diesel sets do more work per litre, last longer and can run for days. Broadly: petrol below about 10 kVA and for infrequent use, diesel above that or for continuous duty.

If sensitive electronics — computers, medical equipment, audio systems — are to be supplied, choose an inverter generator with a clean sine-wave output rather than a conventional petrol set.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can a petrol generator be used at home?

Yes, but only outdoors or in a well-ventilated external area — exhaust gas is lethal in an enclosed space. If it feeds the building wiring, a mechanically interlocked transfer arrangement between mains and generator is mandatory.

  • What will a 5 kVA petrol generator run?

A 5 kVA set delivers about 4 kW continuously. Lighting, a fridge, a television, a modem, a small water pump and a few hand tools fit that budget. Air conditioning, electric heaters and large motors need a bigger set because of their starting current.

  • Recoil or electric start?

Recoil models are cheaper and practical at low ratings. Electric start turns over on a key and is much easier in cold weather or where the set is started often. Many models in this range offer both.

  • How much fuel does a petrol generator use?

It depends on rating and load; a 5 kVA set is typically around 1.3–2 l/h at full load. Every product page publishes the manufacturer's consumption figure and tank capacity, which together give the run time.

  • Can I run a computer or television from a petrol generator?

A conventional AVR-regulated set will run most household appliances, but its waveform is not ideal for sensitive electronics. For computers, medical equipment or professional audio, choose an inverter generator.

  • Are three-phase petrol generators available?

Yes, from 8 kVA upwards there are models with 400/230 V three-phase output. A trailing 3 in the model name indicates three-phase.
