Portable Diesel Generators

A portable diesel generator runs an air-cooled diesel engine on a wheeled or handle-framed chassis. It is far lighter and easier to move than a stationary canopy set, and does more work per litre than a petrol set, which suits long hours on site. The range here runs from 6 to 25 kVA in canopy (silenced) and open-frame versions.

Where they are used

The typical setting is a site with no grid or an unreliable one: construction sites, irrigation pumps, greenhouses, mobile maintenance teams, outdoor events and small-business backup. A 6–10 kVA set covers the essential loads of a workshop or small business; a 13–25 kVA set covers motor loads such as irrigation pumps and refrigeration.

Canopy models (SC and similar codes) sit in a sound-attenuated enclosure, which matters near housing or during long runs. Open-frame models are lighter and suit sites where noise is not a constraint.

Portable diesel, petrol, or a stationary set

Petrol sets are cheaper and lighter, but fuel cost climbs quickly over long hours. Portable diesel sets are markedly more economical for days of site work and the engine lasts longer. Stationary canopy diesel sets are for higher ratings and permanent installation; moving them takes a crane and a trailer.

In practice: if the set moves between sites and is under 25 kVA, choose portable diesel; if it is installed permanently and above 25 kVA, choose a canopy industrial set.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How portable is a portable diesel generator?

Sets in this class typically weigh 120–300 kg and come on a wheeled chassis or with carrying handles. They can be moved between sites in a van or on a trailer, unlike stationary canopy sets which need a crane.

  • What size set does an irrigation pump need?

Check the pump motor's rated power and allow for starting current — electric motors draw three to six times their rating on start-up. A 5.5 kW submersible pump usually calls for 13 kVA or more. Send us the pump nameplate and we will size it.

  • How quiet is a canopy portable set?

Canopy models are typically 65–75 dBA at 7 m and open-frame models 77–85 dBA. The manufacturer's measured figure is published on every product page.

  • How long does a portable diesel generator run?

Run time is tank capacity divided by full-load consumption, typically 8–16 hours in this class. Both figures appear on every product page.

  • Are three-phase portable diesel generators available?

Yes, models with 400/230 V three-phase output are available; a trailing 3 in the model name indicates three-phase. You need one if the load includes a three-phase motor.

  • Is there an automatic version?

Sets in this class are usually manual or electric start. Where the set must start without an operator, a canopy set with an automatic transfer panel is the better fit — tell us the requirement and we will propose a configuration.
