Why the ring carries the most torque
A closed ring wraps all six corners of the nut and puts the load on the flats rather than the corners. Where an open jaw presses on two points, a ring triples the contact -- which is what makes it the one hand wrench that can be trusted with the torque peak of breaking a joint loose.
A twelve-point ring engages a hexagon every 30 degrees, halving the angle needed to refit the wrench in a tight space. A six-point ring widens the contact instead and holds better on nuts whose corners are already worn.
Flat, offset and half-moon patterns
The flat ring wrench keeps ring and handle in one plane and is the thinnest pattern -- it works in shallow recesses and in the gap between two parts. On the offset pattern the ring is cranked up out of that plane, leaving clearance between your hand and the surface the nut sits on.
A half-moon wrench is a ring wrench whose body curves in a crescent, so it reaches over pipework, hose runs and cable looms to the nut behind them. It is listed here double-ended in both metric and SAE.
Material and standard
