Slugging Wrenches
A slugging wrench is a single-ended wrench forged heavy with a striking pad, made to be hit with a club hammer where hand force is not enough: flange bolts, die fittings and large nuts. Hitting an ordinary wrench breaks it; this group is built to take the blow. Open-jaw and ring patterns are listed here in the heavy sizes above 24 mm.

Why slugging wrenches are a class of their own
A slugging wrench is made to be hit with a club hammer on the flat pad at its tail. The body is short and thick and the forging is left to absorb the blow across the section. Hitting an ordinary wrench breaks it; on this one the blow is how the tool works.
There are two patterns here, open-jaw and ring. The ring is the one to reach for, because it wraps the nut completely; the open jaw is for the ends of shafts and tie rods you cannot pass a ring over. Sizes generally start above 24 mm, because this is the method for joints hand force will not move.
Extended-handle ring wrenches
The extended-handle ring wrench does the same job with leverage instead of impact: a slip-on handle tube lengthens the arm and raises the moment in proportion. The tubes themselves are listed here in several lengths alongside the wrenches.
The limit on that leverage is the wrench. Double the handle and you double the force on the jaw, so use the tube sized for the wrench rather than the longest one to hand.
Safe use
Strike the pad along the turning direction, not across the axis of the wrench. Dress a pad that has begun to mushroom -- a fragment coming off one causes serious injury.
Match hammer weight to wrench size. Eye protection is not optional with this group.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a slugging wrench?
A heavy single-ended wrench with a striking pad at the tail, hit with a club hammer. It is for flange bolts, die fittings and large nuts where hand force is not enough.
Can I hit an ordinary wrench with a hammer?
No. A standard wrench is not designed to take a blow; it breaks, and the fragment injures. Only a wrench forged for the job takes impact.
Open jaw or ring?
Ring wherever it will go on, because it wraps the nut and loads the flats. The open jaw is for shaft and tie-rod ends you cannot pass a ring over.
How does an extended-handle wrench compare?
Both are for joints beyond hand force; one uses impact, the other leverage. Choose the extended handle where you cannot swing a hammer or where vibration is unwelcome.
Can I use a longer tube for more leverage?
No. Force on the jaw rises in proportion to handle length, and the wrench can be permanently deformed. Use the handle tube sized for that wrench.
